Pituitary Disease
The pituitary gland is a small, pea-sized organ located at the base of the brain, but don’t let its size fool you. Often called the “master gland,” the pituitary plays a critical role in regulating hormones that affect nearly every function in the body, from growth and fertility to metabolism and stress response.
When the pituitary gland is not working properly, it can lead to a wide range of symptoms that are often subtle at first but may become more noticeable over time. Because pituitary disorders can impact several other hormone-producing glands, they often require careful evaluation and coordinated care.
Some of the more common pituitary conditions include:
-
Pituitary tumors (adenomas)
-
Acromegaly
-
Cushing’s disease
-
Hypopituitarism (underactive pituitary)
-
Hyperprolactinemia (elevated prolactin levels)
-
Diabetes insipidus
-
Growth hormone deficiency
These conditions can cause symptoms such as fatigue, vision changes, irregular periods, low libido, unexplained weight gain or loss, and more.
